What We Feed

Our winning winter blend—recommended by Beaver Valley Farm—is equal parts nutritious and cost-smart:

  • Winter Blend (20 lbs.): Packed with black oil sunflower seeds and suet granules (birds love it; squirrels would too, if only they could get at it!)
  • Economy Blend (40 lbs.): A supplemental mix to stretch the winter seed supply while keeping meals hearty.
  • Suggested Mix: Combine both blends for optimal nutrition and value.

Pro Tip: Save the mealworms for spring! Birds need them for feeding their young—not for winter snacking. Besides, 11 lbs. at $71 is practically gourmet dining.

Feeding Schedule

Our incredible volunteers visit the park 1–2 times weekly, refilling feeders, clearing snow, and checking for clumped or wet seed. After storms, we check sooner—birds need extra support when conditions are toughest.

Winter feeding typically wraps up by early April.

Clean Feeders = Healthy Birds

About once a month (when temperatures rise above freezing), feeders are:

  • Emptied
  • Brushed out
  • Cleaned with a mild bleach solution
  • Checked for mold or moisture

If you see a damaged hook, branch, or feeder, send a quick message to pelhampathways@gmail.com.

Want to Get Involved?

If you love birds, winter peace, or simply want an excuse to get outside once a week, we welcome new volunteers! Training is quick, easy, and guaranteed to raise your mood (birds are impossible to watch without smiling).

Share Your Feeder Photos!

Do you have birds visiting your backyard feeders this winter? We’d love to feature them! Send us your best photos—chickadees, bluebirds, woodpeckers, quirky bird moments, or even a squirrel caught in the act—and we’ll showcase them on the Pelham Pathways website and social media.
