Open Space, Smart Growth & Community Parks

Southern New Hampshire — particularly Rockingham and Hillsborough Counties — continues to experience sustained suburban growth and land conversion. As open land becomes increasingly fragmented, communities must make intentional decisions about how development and conservation coexist.

Pelham Pathways creates community parks as a strategic response to these regional land-use trends.

Our projects align with the Town of Pelham Master Plan goals for open space preservation, pedestrian connectivity, environmental stewardship, and age-friendly community design. By securing and enhancing accessible green spaces, we help balance growth with conservation — protecting the rural character and ecological health that define our region.

Community parks are more than recreational amenities. They are long-term conservation investments that:

Provide structured gathering spaces without expanding municipal infrastructure burdens

  • Reduce habitat fragmentation and preserve contiguous tree canopy
  • Protect wetlands buffers and natural stormwater infiltration systems
  • Support native plant communities and pollinator habitat
  • Expand inclusive, ADA-accessible outdoor recreation
  • Strengthen property values and long-term community stability

Our work is also informed by the New Hampshire Wildlife Action Plan, which identifies habitat loss, fragmentation, invasive species, and climate change as primary threats to the state’s Species of Greatest Conservation Need. By preserving native vegetation, improving habitat connectivity, and reducing edge effects through thoughtful design, Pelham Pathways’ park initiatives directly support statewide conservation priorities.

In addition, permanently protected green spaces contribute to climate resilience. Tree canopy and native plantings enhance carbon sequestration, moderate heat island effects, improve air quality, and increase natural storm water absorption capacity — strengthening community resilience in the face of more frequent extreme weather events.

Thoughtfully designed parks represent smart growth in action. They concentrate recreational use in appropriate locations while protecting sensitive land. They create gathering spaces without expanding road networks or high-impact infrastructure. They help ensure that development does not erase the environmental assets that attract families and businesses to Southern New Hampshire.
